FAQ

What is acceptable behaviour?

The Workshop reserves the right to ask any delegate to withdraw on the grounds of antisocial behaviour, without reimbursement of their fee. This includes possession of alcohol or illegal drugs on University premises. Please note the Workshop requires all delegates attending our conferences to have read the 'Code of Conduct' and to adhere to it's guidelines. You will need to confirm that you have read and agreed to this code by signing the 'Personal Registration Form' sent to you with your delegate conference information. Please bring this form with you to your Conference Registration.

What if there is an Emergency?

A member of staff will be staying in each Hall of Residence and there will be a resident Conference Manager. Workshop staff can be contacted through University Security (on call 24 hours). The Security number can be found on the telephone in your room. During the day Cripps medical facilities are available on an appointment basis; delegates can arrange these themselves or can go through a Workshop member of staff. For all emergencies, please call the University Emergency number on 18888 who will call the ambulance service and guide them onto the campus for you, ensuring they get to you as quickly as possible. Always inform a member of the Workshop team if you have any problems.

What about Information for parents/guardians?

Enclosed with your details will be a set of information details for your Parents or Guardians. Please ensure that they view and take copies of this information before you attend the conference, so they know how to contact you if necessary.

Walking times and distances on the campus

What about when the conference ends?

Remember to clear your room of belongings and return your room key by 9.00am on the last day. There will be a secure place to leave bags in your Hall of Residence. If you are going to need a taxi to get you to the station, you should book this in advance; telephone numbers are available from the Information Desk. When you receive your Delegate information you will also be informed of your departure time.

Are there telephones on campus?

There are public telephones in all the Halls of Residence and in the Medical School. All delegate rooms have ntl telephones for incoming calls only. Should you wish to make outgoing calls you will need an ntl phone card that can be purchased from your Hall of Residence Porter for £5. On arrival all delegates should take a moment to phone their parent/guardian to inform them of their safe arrival and their room contact numbers..

What do I need to bring and to wear?

You should bring all the information sent to you concerning your booking, in particular your Booking Confirmation Document and University Campus Map. You will need a note pad and pens for note taking. Some spending money will be required for meals (breakfast is included), buses or taxis. Clothes should be smart casual.

How do I get information when I arrive at conference?

There will be an Information Desk in the foyer outside all Lecture Theatres. Delegates arriving late will be able to register here during the afternoon break and at other times it will be available for information. Please use this desk or approach a member of the Workshop team if you have any problems great or small.

What about the Edge Session?

(This applies to Medlink, Vet-Medlink, Law, Criminal Law, Forensics, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Business, Psychology and Medisix) This is an optional session that has the single aim of improving your chances of winning a place at University and applies to the above conferences only. The session costs £10.50 and will either be scheduled to take place in the evening of your conference or the afternoon of your departure day avoiding any clashes with other lectures. Occasionally it is necessary to hold this session on the afternoon following the end of the main conference programme. Please contact the Conference Office for the timings of this session.

What about stethoscopes on some courses?

This applies to Physiotherapy/Plus, Nursing, extra Practical Session, and Medisix Plus Conferences only and Medlink. A free stethoscope will be provided for those attending the above conferences in order to participate in the Physical Examination and Diagnosis session. These stethoscopes are available to upgrade to a superior professional stethoscope for £15.00 on return of your unused standard stethoscope.  All pre-ordered stethoscopes will be available for collection at Registration on the first day of your conference.

What about the optional interviews on some courses?

(These are optional sessions for Law Plus, Physiotherapy Plus, Medisix Plus & Vetsim) If you have paid an additional £6.50 for a mock interview on the above conferences, you should complete and bring your interview form with you to conference. If you would like to add this to your booking you can phone the office. Times and locations for interviews will be posted at conference outside your lecture theatre. What to wear: Your attire should reflect an actual interview scenario.

What about the lectures and presentations?

A full timetable will be given to all delegates on arrival, giving times and locations. If your first lecture is in the Medical School, please note that it is a 15-20 minute walk from the Halls of Residence and is approached by a footbridge which must be used at all times. There is no car parking available at the Medical School, so delegates are advised to leave cars at the Halls of Residence and walk to any sessions there.

What about meals and refreshments?

Breakfast, which is included in the conference fee, will be served in your Hall, or an adjacent, Hall of Residence between 7.00 and 8.45 am. Lunch and evening meal arrangements will be confirmed at conference. All meals cater for students, therefore prices are very reasonable; delegates should expect to pay around £3.50 for lunch and £5 for their evening meal. Vegetarians are routinely catered for but if you are vegan or have any special dietary requirements please inform us when booking your place at conference. Please note that Vetsim and Medsim are full board conferences.

What is the accommodation like?

Students will stay in single study bedrooms in a Hall of Residence on the University campus. Linen and towels are provided, but you may wish to bring a larger bath towel. Please let us know in advance if you have restricted mobility, so that special arrangements can be made. You MUST clear your room and return your key before 9.00am on the last day, please note the University charges a fine of £25 + VAT for lost keys. There will be a secure place to leave bags in each Hall on that day. Your room key will be available for collection after 3.00pm, but this will depend on whether a previous conference is leaving the same day requiring room servicing to be done during the morning.

How and when do I register?

Following receipt of your booking, you will have received acknowledgement of your place on conference and a copy of the Booking Confirmation Document. This will advise you where to register and at what time. During registration you will be informed as to what Hall you are staying in (either the registration hall or an adjacent hall) and given your conference programme. Anyone arriving late for registration will be able to collect a programme from their registration point and go straight to their first lecture. They will have the opportunity to register at the information desk outside their lecture theatre during the afternoon break.

Is there parking on the campus?

The Halls of Residence where you register and stay have limited parking facilities except for the disabled (please inform us as soon as possible if you have any mobility problems). Instead you and your luggage may be dropped at the designated drop-off zones at your Hall of Residence. You may park a vehicle at the Social Sciences Car Park at the rear of Hugh Stewart and Cripps Halls of Residence (refer to the enclosed maps). Please avoid parking on the roadside (unless in a designated parking space) and in the ‘drop off zones’ as these must be left clear for emergency service vehicles.
